Porta is an independent coffee roasters, delivery and coffee subscription service based in Sevenoaks in Kent, founded by coffee connoisseurs Cynthia and Jeremy Meiring. 

Jeremy’s passion for really good coffee got him into roasting his own beans, and pretty quickly his hobby grew into an obsession. Porta now has eight different roasts as well as regular guest blends using beans from across the globe. All can be ordered online and delivered to your door anywhere in the UK.

Jeremy’s background working as an engineer means he takes an analytical approach to coffee flavour profiles. 

His early home-roasting experiments led to him considering the finest of details, including factors such as the seasonal impact of outdoor roasting and even wind direction. After months of analysis, he was producing great-tasting, precision-engineered coffee.  

We created simple line illustrations with a pared-back colour palette to highlight the door-to-door delivery service. These illustrations became the centrepiece to the brand identity. We produced 10 different illustrations for the packaging, with each illustration having its own unique style and character - much like the flavour profiles of the coffees themselves. 

As well as the coffee labels and delivery packaging, the identity was applied across marketing materials such as stickers, banners and tote bags, as well digital media and an online shop.

Porta wanted to be able to manage the digital marketing and printing of their labels in-house. Once a particular roast is gone, it’s gone, and so the label designs need to be interchangeable and the label product description changed with each new roast.

Our solution was to create a unique Brand Kit in Canva. Canva is a free-to-use graphic layout app which allows the user to create simple designs on the fly using their phone or a desktop computer. 

Once we had created Porta’s brand assets, we uploaded the individual files to Canva as templates. To ensure consistency, we supplied a simple set of guidelines for the brand identity. We also created tile and story templates for Instagram and created artwork templates for the coffee labels. The label templates could then be updated and printed
in-house. 

Porta’s main point of sale is online. We began the web design process by working with the client to create a well-defined brief considering the features and functionality that would help drive sales and deliver a great user experience. These included subscription options and gift cards.

The site was then designed and built using the Shopify platform. As with the labels and marketing, this allowed the client to manage the shop in-house once the site went live, including adding and updating inventory.
